Although he did not maintain that torrid pace, he still became the most prolific strikeout pitcher in the game’s history. Pitchers have become stronger in the modern era due to new training and nutrition. They also benefit from advancements in technology and scouting. The six pitchers with a better strikeouts ratio per nine innings all hail from the modern era (Sale, Scherzer, Randy Johnson, Cole, Pedro Martinez, and Kershaw). In the prior 120+ years, no pitcher struck out more batters per nine innings than Nolan Ryan at 9.55. This stat speaks to his fastball and devastating curve and breaking ball. His ‘70 Topps card celebrates what would become the hallmark of his career—a wonderful keepsake for Ryan fans. This example earned the PWCC-S (Superior—Top 5%) Eye Appeal designation for its centering, color, surfaces, corners, and edges. PWCC believes it should have received a higher grade. PWCC’s Eye Appeal cards often sell for a higher price than their peers due to their aesthetics.
