In 1957, Corny Salvaterra became the first quarterback ever selected with the 199th overall pick in the NFL Draft, but his career never materialized. The Chiefs selected Steve Matthews at No. 199 in 1994, but he never saw the field until the Jaguars claimed him off waivers in 1997. Jacksonville had a QB quandary in training camp after an injury to Mark Brunell, and when Jags backup Rob Johnson sustained an injury in the season opener, they turned to their new emergency man—making Matthews the first QB taken 199th overall to start a game. Unlike Brady, who used a series of emergency spot starts to jumpstart a decades-long career in 2001, Matthews’ only other appearance came with the Titans on a meaningless final drive over the last 57 seconds of the 1998 season finale. \r\n\r\nBrady, who spent his rookie season as the third or fourth quarterback in New England’s pecking order, elevated himself to the backup role the following year after a studious offseason and promising training camp. When a defender’s crushing blow smashed $100 million starter Drew Bledsoe in the second week of the 2001 season, Brady trotted out for the final drive with a chance to win the game. The Pats lost that day, but in Brady’s first career start the following week, he engineered the offense to a 44-13 win over the Colts without throwing a touchdown. “Tom has got a real good personality for a quarterback,” said coach Bill Belichick. “He is confident, but he is not cocky. He is assertive, but he is not overbearing. I don’t think he is very offensive, but at the same time, he can come on pretty strong and make a point or get a point across without being antagonistic or offensive in doing it. It’s hard for me to exactly verbalize how he does that, but just his mannerisms and the way he communicates.” \r\n\r\nCollectors, however, will want to exude confidence, cockiness, and assertiveness with their bids during this month’s Premier Auction if they want to add this BGS 8 example of Brady’s 2000 Playoff Contenders /100 Championship Ticket Rookie Auto. The Championship Ticket parallel adds a hint of reflective holofoil along the right side of the base rookie auto, and Brady’s hard-signed signature on this example earned the coveted Auto 10 designation. Brady appears in fewer than a dozen mainstream autograph releases from 2000, and the Championship Ticket parallel is one of only four that feature him in a Patriots uniform, so demand for this card will not likely waver because those who own one stand at the summit of modern football collecting.","serial":"0005477999","isComplete":true,"paymentStatus":"PAID","itemVariantId":"e74aa231-9b77-57ce-8c58-f7b1e59a15bf","listingUuid":"320a14ae-e3a6-11ed-a53b-0a58a9feac02","purchasedQuantity":0}
